【JLPT N5】Grammar:ぜひ / zehi

Grammer

sentence pattern: ぜひ / zehi

【Grammar Type】
adverb

【Essential Meaning】
“by all means / really”
An expression that emphasizes a request or desire.

【Construction】
zehi + verb in Te form
zehi + honorific expressions

NOTE

(1) Basically, it is not used with negative sentences.
Example:
❌ぜひ来ないでください。
zehi konaide kudasai
Please do not come.

(2) Because it is used for human actions, it cannot be used for natural phenomena.
Example:
❌明日は嫌いな運動会だから、ぜひ雨が降って欲しい。
asita wa kiraina undoukai dakara, zehi amega futte hosii.
Tomorrow is the field day which I hate, so please let it rain.

(3) Many learners confuse “必ず (kanarazu)” with “是非(zehi)” because they have similar meanings. “kanarazu” means “absolutely” and is a grammatical expression that emphasizes obligation or responsibility. For example, “zehi kitekudasai (Please come!)” emphasizes a welcoming feeling (please come), whereas “kanarazu kitekudasai (You must come!)” emphasizes an obligation.
